Community Support
The financial contributions and volunteer staffing support received by Indian Health Care Resource Center from the community are highly valued and most appreciated. The annual Dance of the Two Moons fund raising event, helps support our prevention programs for Indian children and youth. Volunteers regularly assist with a wide variety of tasks, including helping with the Dance of the Two Moons preparations, to mailing newsletters, to preparing health education packets for our Public Health Nurse. Donations and volunteer support also help defray the costs of our growing Tulsa Indian Youth Program.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of Tulsa's generosity at IHCRC is our Diagnostic Imaging Department, which receives both philanthropic support and staff resources. A grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Tulsa Race for the Cure supports IHCRC's Native American Breast Cancer Screening and Education program. In addition to the financial support provided by the Komen Foundation, IHCRC's mammography and radiography services are also supported by the AARP's Senior Community Service Employment Program. This program pays seniors to work at area nonprofit agencies to learn new skills and to gain recent work experience. Importantly for IHCRC, the AARP staff contribute their time and talents at no cost to our agency. Katy Johnson, IHCRC's mammographer and radiographer, uses the AARP participants to help clean equipment, manage paperwork and make reminder calls for annual mammography screening exams. The AARP workers were especially helpful in assisting IHCRC receive its three-year term of accreditation in mammography from the American College of Radiology.
